White Sox announce ‘Paul Konerko Day’ Sept. 27
MINNEAPOLIS — A special pregame tribute for retiring White Sox captain Paul Konerko is set for Saturday, September 27 before the Sox play the Royals at U.S Cellular Field in their second-to-last game of the season at 6:10 p.m. A ceremony on “Paul Konerko Day” will celebrate Konerko’s career and “legacy on and off the field in franchise history,” the team announced Wednesday.
The Sox also launched a 60-second commercial which can be seen at whitesox.com/Konerko. The video thanks Konerko for his time in Chicago, and reenacts memorable moments in Konerko’s career through the imagination of a young Sox fan.
The Sox are honoring Konerko with fan giveaways at all remaining home games, and have set up “Club Konerko” in Sections 158 and 159.
Konerko, 38, said he is at peace with retiring and has no regrets he decided last December to play one more season.
“I don’t think there is any question that it should end now,” he said. “The question was should it have gone on for another year or would it have been just as right a year ago. I’m the only one who can know that and for me I know the answer is ‘I should have come back for a lot of reasons.’ ”
Konerko, who played 16 seasons in Chicago, is the franchise leader in total bases and is second in homers and RBI behind Frank Thomas.
“I understand the games are dwindling and the home games are dwindling,” Konerko said. “I don’t know what you can do except try to always have a fun, good day.”
The Twins were planning to honor Konerko before Wednesday’s game. It would be Konerko’s last appearance in Minneapolis against the Sox’ AL Central rivals. Konerko was not in the starting lineup.
