Washington Redskins sacked by U.S. Patent Office
The Washington Redskins got sacked today. Six times.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled six federal trademark registrations for the “Redskins” nickname, saying it’s “disparaging to Native Americans.”
“We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered,” read a statement from the Trademark Trial and Appeals board.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder has been feeling pressure from various groups to change their name, but repeatedly has held his ground. The financial impact from this trademark decision could change all that.
