Ventura names Matt Lindstrom as White Sox closer
Matt Lindstrom will start the season as the White Sox closer, manager Robin Ventura revealed on Opening Day Monday.
Lindstrom, who saved 15 games for the Florida Marlins and 2009 and 23 for the Houston Astros in 2010, was a setup man for the Sox last season. The role became vacated when Addison Reed was traded during the offseason for third base prospect Matt Davidson.
Lindstrom said the strained left oblique that sidelined him for two weeks during spring training is 100 percent.
“In the past he has closed,” Ventura said.”Right now he has a good slider. Giving a guy a full inning, some guys like that and he’s one who likes that.”
Ventura and general manager Rick Hahn said that bullpen roles are not etched in stone, though Hahn said he hopes Lindstrom takes the job and runs with it.
The Sox play the Minnesota Twins at 3:10 p.m. Chris Sale will start for the Sox against Twins right-hander Ricky Nolasco.
