Tough start to season for Cubs’ top prospect Javy Baez, who goes on DL with ankle injury
Top prospect Javy Baez’s first month with Class AAA Iowa isn’t getting any easier.
Less than a week after an ejection and altercation with a teammate, Baez went on the 7-day disabled list this weekend after turning his ankle Friday while taking fielding practice.
The power-hitting shortstop, who opened the season on a 0-for-9 skid, is 4-for-17 since then with two home runs. He has 10 strikeouts in 26 at-bats.
On April 5, in the midst of his slump, Baez was ejected for an arguing a checked-swing third strike, then faced off with veteran catcher Eli Whiteside, who tried to talk to him in the dugout.
Several teammates later called out Baez, who responded with a more mature approach, team officials said. He was benched from the start of his next game but came off the bench to his a pinch home run late in the game.
