Tony Dungy would not have drafted Michael Sam
Former NFL coach Tony Dungy said he would not have drafted Michael Sam because he “wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.”
In a story about NFL locker-room culture, the NBC analyst was asked by the Tampa Tribune about drafting the first openly gay player:
“I wouldn’t have taken him. Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.
“It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.’’
Apparently, Dungy didn’t see a similar distraction when quarterback Michael Vick came back to the NFL. Dungy helped mentor Vick after his role in a dogfighting ring and subsequent 18-month prison sentence.
