The Home Run Derby MLB should have shown
It started with a rain delay, ended with an anti-climactic 9-1 victory for Yoenis Cespedes, and in between there was ESPN’s Chris Berman. Talk about a warning-track out!
With actor and part-time broadcaster Mark Scott announcing—”it’s a home run or nothing on Home Run Derby”—the original show was filmed in the offseason from Wrigley Field in Los Angeles and lasted just 26 episodes. It never made it to a second season. Neither did the Illinois native Scott, who died of a heart attack at 45.
Check out this first installment featuring Mickey Mantle vs. Willie Mays. The Mick’s commentary is priceless. Also worth watching is how Scott keeps a meticulous scorecard. Guaranteed you’ll be hearing, “going, going, it’s GONE!” in your sleep.
