Jonathan Toews leaves game after taking big hit
PITTSBURGH — Jonathan Toews left Sunday night’s game against the Penguins after taking a big hit along the boards by defenseman Brooks Orpik. The Blackhawks announced he had an upper-body injury and wouldn’t return.
With about 6:30 left in the second period and the Hawks trailing 2-1, Orpik drilled Toews with a shoulder that appeared to hit Toews in the shoulder and the head at the same time, and sent him into the boards. Toews got up wincing and holding his left arm, skating straight to the bench before heading off to the dressing room. There was no immediate word on his status.
The Hawks already are without Patrick Kane, who suffered an apparent knee injury, until the playoffs. He has missed six games so far.
