White Sox’s Abreu logs 11th home run of rookie season
CLEVELAND – After building a very strong case for American League Player of the Month in April, Jose Abreu kicked off his May with his 11th home run of his rookie season.
The Abreu “mosts” just keep on coming. His 11 homers are the most in White Sox history thru 30 games, and the most in a player’s first 30 games since the Mets’ Mike Jacobs had 11 in 2005.
Abreu, who had struck out twice on fastballs from Indians right-hander Danny Salazar, connected on a 2-0 pitch in the fifth inning Friday night. Most of Abreu’s homers have been to the opposite field, but this one was a towering shot that landed about about 40 feet inside the left-field foul pole.
The homer gave Abreu 33 RBI, which leads the American League.
The Indians were leading the Sox 12-5 through six innings. Sox starter John Danks was roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks. Danks gave up homers to Carlos Santana and Michael Brantley.
