Villanueva joins Cubs rotation Sunday
OAKLAND – Carlos Villanueva, who hasn’t pitched more than 2 2/3 innings in a game since May 14, will join the Cubs rotation Sunday after just one lengthy (44-pitch) outing, manager Dale Sveum said Thursday.
The Cubs originally planned to stretch out Villanueva in one more long relief outing before putting him in rotation spot vacated by Scott Feldman’s trade to Baltimore.
But given the alternatives, starting the next time out seemed like the best option for using the 60-70 pitches he’ll be limited to.
Villanueva (2-4, 3.45) opened the season in the rotation and went 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA in eight starts before being bumped to the bullpen when Matt Garza returned from the disabled list in May.
The Cubs haven’t decided whether to call up a fresh arm from the minors as a long-relief option for Villanueva on Sunday.
“It’s probably going to depend what happens with our bullpen the next three days,” Sveum said. “If it’s really fresh and no stress out there, we’ll probably just wing it.”
