Good health news for achy, cranky Cubs
MESA, Ariz. — At a time players in some spring camps are dropping by the day, the Cubs seem to be getting healthier.
Left-hander James Russell, who had been backed off much of the past two weeks because of “a little dead arm,” responded well enough to a bullpen side session Monday that he’s been scheduled to make his spring game debut Wednesday night against the Mariners in Peoria, Ariz.
“Everything’s great,” Russell said.
Outfielder Ryan Sweeney, who twisted his knee when he slipped on a field drain Sunday chasing a double in the right-field corner, is back in the lineup in right field Tuesday.
And manager Rick Renteria said shortstop Starlin Castro (hamstring) did well on his first day of running and “dry swings” as he progresses toward a possible return to the lineup next week.
