Cubs’ top pitching prospect C.J. Edwards to miss more than a month with shoulder injury
The Cubs’ top pitching prospect is expected to be sidelined for more than a month with a shoulder injury, but the Cubs considered the results of C.J. Edwards’ MRI on Friday good news.
The MRI showed inflammation but no structural damage in his right shoulder, the team said. The team plans to shut him down for the next two weeks then have him start a throwing program and work back into pitching shape.
Edwards, the 28th-ranked prospect in baseball according to Baseball America, threw a season-high six innings in his most recent start Sunday and then experienced “tightness” in the shoulder during a scheduled side session Wednesday.
The right-hander, who was acquired from Texas in the Matt Garza trade last July, is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in four starts for Class AA Tennessee this season, with 20 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
