Cubs’ Junior Lake goes viral with wardrobe malfunction
PITTSBURGH — Nobody can explain how he missed the one he was supposed to wear, the one hanging conspicuously across the front of his locker stall, the one Junior Lake somehow looked right past as he reached into his stall to pull out the wrong Cubs road jersey before taking the field Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Lake can’t explain it either. He didn’t even notice until he had already taken his position in left field for the bottom of the first inning – after he had batted in the top half — and only then when relief pitcher Justin Grimm yelled from the bullpen.
“He said, `Hey you got the wrong jersey,’ “ Lake said. “I thought he was joking. Then I looked [down] and then see everybody else, and I said, `Oh, f—.’ “
By the time he could rush to the clubhouse and change into the right jersey after the inning ended, he was an internet, Twitter and TV sensation – the blogosphere alive with screen grabs of him in the classic “Chicago” jersey and teammates in this year’s new alternate “Cubs” top.
“It was hilarious,” teammate Welington Castillo said.
Teammates laughed after the game when they saw reporters converge on Lake in the clubhouse for what could be only one topic.
“No, he had the right one,” said one clubhouse wag, shaking his head. “The other 24 guys got it wrong.”
