Patrick and Abby Sharp celebrate the birth of Madelyn Grace
Not long after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against the New York Islanders on Thursday night, Patrick Sharp got even better news.
“I called my wife after the game and was expecting to hear congratulations, nice goal or good game or something,” Sharp said. “The first thing she said was, ‘I think I’m having the baby tonight.’ I forgot about hockey pretty quick.”
Abby Sharp gave birth to Madelyn Grace (6 pounds, 2 ounces and 19 inches) on Friday at 5:29 p.m. Since she was due Dec. 15, the Sharps had first thought it was just “cramping or something else going on.”
“But as soon as I got home, we knew something was going on and it was going to come in the next day,” Patrick Sharp said. “Everyone is good. Mom is awesome. Baby is in great shape. I thought I’d be a wreck, be nervous and stressing out about everything, but everyone at the hospital was great.
“My wife Abby was awesome throughout the whole thing. She was really in control. It was a great experience.”
Sharp was nothing but smiles after practice Saturday. He was thrilled to be there for the birth of his first child and not on the road. He’s the second Hawk to have a child this year. Marian Hossa and his wife, Jana, celebrated the arrival of Mia just before the season started.
“It’s crazy,” Sharp said. “You can prepare and talk about it as much as you want. My brothers has two daughters. I talked to [Hossa] a lot this year. You can think you’re ready for it and then what happens it’s a whole different situation. I’m excited for them to come home [on Sunday].
“When I saw the baby for the first time, it was an unbelievable feeling. You really can’t describe it until you go through it yourself.”
Sharp knows his pre-game naps may no longer be an option now that he’s a father.
“I told [Duncan Keith], he’s got that big house,” Sharp said. “I might be renting one of the bedrooms for game days. But that’s OK, I’ll give up the pre-game nap if I have to for that.”
