Blackhawks’ Patrick Sharp on his botched goal celebration: ‘I always do stupid things when I score.’
Patrick Sharp was awfully excited. Then he was awfully embarrassed.
After his power play goal gave the Blackhawks a 5-4 lead with 8:41 left in the third period of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final in Boston on Wednesday night, Sharp figured he might have just scored the game-winner. So he went down to one knee for an apparent fist-pump attempt, only to run into a pick set by Patrick Kane. Sharp awkwardly powered through, stood up, thrust his fist in the air… and fell down.
“I always do stupid things when I score and I don’t have anything planned,” Sharp said. “I just get so excited.”
“That’s on the trainers,” Sharp joked on Friday. “They’ve got so sharpen my skates to make sure I don’t have any lost edges.”
Sharp’s botched celebration inspired a Top 10 Most Awkward Celebrations list on TSN’s “SportsCentre” and earned the Hawks winger — a noted needler of teammates — a fair bit of chirping from the guys in his own dressing room.
“Sharpie doesn’t really see too much embarrassment, so it’s good for him to get his fill,” Kane said.
Sharp said he told Kane he should have stopped him before he embarrassed himself. But Kane was in a tough spot — join in on the celebration, or give Sharp his space? He sort of got caught in between the two options.
“I probably should have grabbed him when I was close to him there in the corner,” Kane said. “I know when someone messes up one of my celebrations, I tend to get mad at him, so I let him go. Now he’s saying I should have grabbed him. It was pretty funny, especially on one of the stations that showed him in slow motion fist-pumping and then falling to the ground.”
Sharp also made an unexpected appearance in a “Late Night” bit that had some fun with some of the Hawks and Bruins official team mugshots.
“Jimmy Fallon said I was ‘most likely to stare at myself in the ice,’ so I was kind of down about that,” Sharp joked. “Maybe I was looking at myself, I don’t know.”
“Thankfully, the focus is on the game tomorrow and the big stage we’re on, so we can kind of forget about that stuff,” Sharp added, perhaps hopefully. “A couple people might have said something. You’re not helping. Hopefully there’s another celebration tomorrow.”
