With Lance Briggs’ deal expiring, no talk of extension
BOURBONNAIS — Bears linebacker Lance Briggs is in the final year of his contract, and that won’t change any time soon.
While continuing his stance against discussing specific players’ contracts, general manager Phil Emery said Wednesday that it would be unusual for the Bears to hand out an extension in the fall. Even talking parameters with an agent happens much later in the season.
“Normally those things don’t come together until the end of the year,” Emery said, “And that’s true, whether it’s Lance or anybody else.”
Briggs is in the final season of a three-year, $17.5 million deal.
Emery and head coach Marc Trestman spoke as part of the opening of training camp at Olivet Nazarene University, where the Bears will begin practice Thursday.
