Rookie Kyle Fuller has big day at Bears camp
BOURBONNAIS — The first day of practice at Bears training camp was a good one for first-round pick Kyle Fuller. The cornerback from Virginia Tech made two interceptions, giving fans in attendance plenty to cheer about
“It felt really good,” Fuller said Friday. “Coach has been harping about coming out and getting takeaways. It’s definitely a good start, but I still got a lot of work to do.”
Fuller picked up where he left off in organized team activities. He stayed at cornerback with the first nickel defense and worked with the second-team base defense.
“[But] you can never get complacent,” Fuller said.
Fuller definitely didn’t look like that on his first interception — a diving grab off of second-string quarterback Jordan Palmer. It was the first highlight of training camp. Fuller’s second interception came after receiver Terrence Toliver slipped.
“Just playing my technique, fundamentals,” Fuller said, ”And when the ball’s in the air, just trying to make a play.”
“That was a terrific play he made in the first series of the day,” coach Marc Trestman said. “The second one, he got a wrong route and he was in the right place and made the play, and that’s a good thing. He’s around the football. It was a good start for him today.”
But there were still learning experiences for Fuller. Speedster Chris Williams beat him for a long completion down the sideline later in the day. He’s also facing Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery often.
“I definitely enjoy coming out here and competing with those guys everyday,” Fuller said. “They’re making me better.”
On one play, Marshall and Fuller jostled for position. Marshall won and took off for big gain as Fuller lost his footing. Cornerback Tim Jennings indicated that Marshall pushed off Fuller, making the flag-throwing motion and yelling at Marshall.
“I love going up against Brandon Marshall,” Fuller said. “He’s a stronger guy. I don’t make a big deal about it, you know. We’re just out there playing football. I just told him that next time I got him.”
