Mike McCoy hired as Chargers head coach
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is about to become the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.
A league source confirmed to me a CBS Sports report that McCoy and the Chargers are working on a deal.
McCoy was a Bears candidate, but I don’t think the club was seriously considering him. As I suggested in the past, I think there may have been some murky issues between McCoy and two players on the roster who played under him in Denver, Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler. The quarterback, of course, only lasted a few weeks with him while Marshall played one season under McCoy before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins.
McCoy was the offensive coordinator in Denver under head coach Josh McDaniels, who shipped Cutler to Chicago.
Meanwhile, many presumed that Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians wanted the Chargers job because Colts player personnel vice president Tom Telesco was hired as the general manager there. But that’s a dangerous assumption.
I’ve gotten several indications that Arians was favoring the Bears and Chargers and may have actually preferred Chicago because of the roster. But Arians has said repeatedly he isn’t going to leave the Colts just for the sake of leaving.
There were reports that Arians was going to interview with the Philadelphia Eagles today but that meeting was never set up.
UPDATE: The NFL Network and CBS Sports are both reporting that McCoy has finalized a deal to become the head coach of the Chargers. So the remaining jobs are: Bears, Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles.
