Marc Trestman reacts to Jimmy Johnson’s rogue Twitter post
Five days before he was officially the Bears coach, Marc Trestman was congratulated by one of his former bosses, Jimmy Johnson.
Johnson was half right; Rob Chudzinski had just been named the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. But Trestman had only conducted a first interview with the Bears, and Bears general manager Phil Emery made clear that he wasn’t his choice until late Tuesday night.
So how did Trestman feel?
“What I did with that was really take adversity and turn it into success,” he said.
He noted their last conversation was over 10 years ago.
“So it was surprising for me to see it,” Trestman said of Johnson’s Twitter post. “If it would have been 20 years ago, I would have shook my head and thought that this was something bad that would happen. But it was out of my control.”
But Trestman said he tracked down Johnson’s cell number and texted him and saying, “I really appreciate that you would think of me [as being one of his “guys”) because I had no connection with him for so long.”
Trestman said his message got him an invitation to Florida to reconnect with Johnson and have a cup of coffeee or a Heineken.”
