Is Mel Tucker in play for Bears defensive coordinator?
New Bears head coach Marc Trestman knows he must move quickly when it comes to replacing defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.
“There’s a rush because in the NFL things move fast,” Trestman said.
Candidates are starting to emerge.
It’s believed Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke, one of the few remaining holdovers from Lovie Smith’s staff, met with Trestman on Friday and is a candidate.
League sources also told the Sun-Times that the Bears are interested in Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Mel Tucker as Marinelli’s replacement.
Tucker has interviewed for the Jaguars’ head coaching job twice and has been passed up each time. He is reportedly looking at other options.
“The bottom line is I would have hoped Rod would have stayed here,” Trestman said. “We had a great conversation and again we’ve got mutual friends that we’ve worked with and know each and every one of us. I don’t think that was an issue.
“But the NFL moves quickly, so we’ve got to do our due diligence. As I said in the meeting, one of the first points of interest is to put the staff together and that should basically tell you we’ve got our work to do and we want to get the best guy in here [for defensive coordinator].”
The only coaches who currently remain from Smith’s tenure are Hoke, safeties coach Gill Byrd and defensive line coach Mike Phair.
