Hall-of-Famer Michael Irvin: Bears WR Brandon Marshall ‘more physically gifted than I am’
BOURBONNAIS — The Bears’ Brandon Marshall is more physically gifted than “The Playmaker.”
Says who? “The Playmaker” himself.
“Brandon’s more physically gifted than I am — size and speed and everything, he’s more physically gifted,” former Cowboys star receiver Michael Irvin said Wednesday during Bears training camp at Olivet Nazarene University. “When I talked with him, I tried to talk to his physical-ness. I had to be physical. I wasn’t running away from anybody.”
Irvin interviewed Marshall as part of his role as an NFL Network analyst. The two have been friends for years.
Irvin joked there was one thing Marshall and the Bears’ receivers do better than he did: block. He praised the Bears’ receivers “fervor” for blocking.
“I’ve always found that part difficult,” Irvin said. “It was nowhere in my contract that (owner) Jerry (Jones) was willing to give me any incentives for blocking.”
Marshall, he said, has learned the mental game to go with his physical traits.
“He’s gone from only relying on those physical gifts shoulders-down, and he’s adding all those extra things,” Irvin said. “The nuances of the game, the tiny parts that make you great.”
