Corey Graham riding momentum of “crazy” game
Corey Graham didn’t register a single tackle, according to the official play by play of Sunday’s victory over the Seattle Seahawks. But teammates and coaches insisted he was one of the stars of the game.
The backup cornerback recovered an onside kick, and he downed three punts, including two inside the Seahawks’ 5-yard line.
“It’s definitely not glamorous but it’s very important,” Graham said. “It’s a big aspect of our team, and I try to go out there and make as many plays as I can. It’s funny how I seemed to come up with a lot of the big plays.
“Hopefully, I can continue to be a playmaker.”
The Bears don’t have any doubt.
Graham led the team in special teams tackles with 25, and his teammates and coaches were trumpeting him for the Pro Bowl.
But his game Sunday was an all-timer.
“Our production charts and scoring system that we have, he scored 31 points in one game, which is really, really high,” special teams coach Dave Toub said. “Twenty points is off the charts; 30 is crazy, so he had an unbelievably productive game last week.”
Graham, the team’s fourth cornerback, finished the season with a team-high 25 special teams tackles.
“We have some players that everyone asks about and then you do have players like Corey Graham, who’s been a stud for us all year,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “Our special teams are important. We feel like we’re as good as anyone with our special teams every time we go out. Corey is a big part of that.”
Graham said he feels he could help the defense.
“I still feel I can play on defense,” he said. “But whatever they ask you to do, you have to do to the best of your ability. If they’re asking me to be a special teams player right now, then I’m going to be the beset special teams player I can be.”
In the second quarter, Brad Maynard placed two punts inside the 5-yard line, and Graham downed them both.
“Corey is the man,” Maynard said. “I told him I’m getting him paid. He’s going to get a signing bonus, and he’s going to owe me.”
