Broncos’ Mike McCoy prepares for interview process — including the Bears
Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is in the running for the Bears’ head coaching position and others. He’s a hot name around the league right now.
McCoy talked to reporters in Denver on Thursday about being a head coaching candidate. He’s expected to interview with the Bears on Sunday and other teams over the weekend.
“It’s an honor being considered for those jobs, but it goes to show you the type of players we have here and the organization we have here,” McCoy told reporters. “As coaches, we’re all products of the players we have and the other guys we work with. It’s an honor and we’ll see what happens.”
McCoy said every coach aspires to be in charge of his own team some day.
“Without a doubt,” he said. “Everyone has individual goals, as a coach and a player, but it’s team-first here and we still have a lot left here. Hopefully, one day I will become a head coach but we still have a lot of football ahead of us here. We’ll see what happens down the road.”
McCoy is currently directing an offense led by future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. But it was his work with Tim Tebow last year that also has garnered attention.
Bears general manager Phil Emery stressed earlier this week that he wants his coach to be able to adapt to his personnel. McCoy definitely has done that going from Tebow to Manning.
“That’s our job as a football coach is to take advantage of your talent and that’s the No. 1 job I have here, to make sure that we evaluate the guys properly in the offseason during training camp and find out, ‘What do we do best as an offense?’ ” McCoy said. “It doesn’t matter who the 11 guys are. If someone goes down, someone comes up and steps in. It’s the ‘Next man up’ here, and we’ve got to make adjustments as a coaching staff, as players and figure out, ‘What do we do best as an organization?’ That’s our job.”
McCoy has spent time researching teams that are interviewing him.
“I can’t put an hour on it,” McCoy told reporters. “I’ve done plenty of research in the past, in the offseason and kind of put my plan together over a number of years. I’ve been doing it for a long time now so I kind of have an idea of the questions and things I want to get answered but the No. 1 priority is the Denver Broncos right now.”
McCoy said he plans on asking the interviewing teams as many questions as they ask him.
“If you’re going into a new situations, you’ve got to make sure that it’s the right one,” he said. “It’s not about just taking any job. That’s not my goal. You’ve got to make sure that when you make the next step for any job you take, that it’s the right one so I’ve got plenty of questions to ask.”
