Bears will look at Jared Allen and others to bolster defensive line
Bears general manager Phil Emery declared Wednesday that his work is far from done when it comes to retooling his roster.
Late Tuesday, the Bears were linked to Vikings free agent defensive end Jared Allen in an ESPN report. On Wednesday, Emery was asked about him.
“We’re going to look at a number of players,” Emery said. “Obviously, Jared is one of those. … Jared’s been a great pass rusher in the league.”
The Bears, though, appear to be only interested if the price is right.
“What will happen is that some of those veteran players that had been released will find teams right away — there will be a quick opportunity,” Emery said. “But then there will be a settling-out period, where they’re going to look for the right fit. Well, we certainly have a good fit here and great opportunities, so we’ll see how that comes together.”
The Bears could definitely use another pass rusher after finishing last in the league in sacks in 2013. Allen turns 32 next month, but his pass-rush skills remain valuable and productive. He had 11.5 sacks last season with the Vikings and has notched 128.5 over his 10-year career.
There is an open spot opposite new defensive end Lamarr Houston for the Bears. Veterans Austen Lane and Trevor Scott were signed for depth and competition.
But the Bears definitely aren’t done looking for help.
“As far as the pass rush is concerned, what you want you want No. 1 is you want to get as many very good players as you can into your program, especially along the defensive line,” Emery said.
