Bears to host Israel Idonije for a visit
The Bears may be looking at bringing back an old friend for their defense.
A league source confirmed to Sun-Times colleague Pat Finley that free agent defensive lineman Israel Idonije will visit the Bears on Tuesday.
Idonije, 33, spent last season with the Detroit Lions after spending nine seasons with the Bears (2004-20012). The Bears did express an interest in re-signing Idonije last offseason but he opted to join the Lions.
Idonije may not fit the Bears’ push for youth on defense, but he does possess the versatility that general manager Phil Emery covets. He can play end or tackle and has starting experience.
Before leaving for the Lions, Idonije was playing some of his best football for the Bears. He had 20.5 sacks in his last three seasons with the Bears, starting 42 games.
