Bears QB Jay Cutler: ‘I’m ready to go’
Jay Cutler is ready for some football.
“I’m ready. I’m ready to go. I’m ready to get started,” said a bearded Cutler, looking rested and comfortable Friday morning at North Avenue Beach, where he is hosting the Jay Cutler Foundation’s charity beach volleyball tournament. “I’ve just been talking to the guys the last couple of weeks and I think everybody’s kind of anxious to get back into it and see what we have.”
Six days before training camp opens in Bourbonnais, Cutler is well aware of the growing anticipation — magnified perhaps by a lackluster baseball season in Chicago — of the Bears’ 2014 season. After adding defensive ends Jared Allen and Lamarr Houston to bolster a 31st-ranked defense, the Bears are the seventh choice in Las Vegas to win the Super Bowl at 16-1, according to Bovada.com. The Bears open training camp Thursday at Olivet Nazarene University.
“There’s a lot of excitement, a lot of buzz,” Cutler said. ”
But there’s a lot of work to do. We’re still kind of in our second year with the new staff, so there are still some kinks to be worked out.”
The offense with Cutler at the controls will be a particular focus this season. The Bears were eighth in total yards and second in points scored in 2013 and enter 2014 virtually intact.
“I feel pretty good about this offseason,” Cutler said. “I think we did a good job, kind of reading through what we needed to read through and getting a good plan for the season.”
