Bears’ Briggs still not cleared to play
Lance Briggs was evaluated by Bears doctors on Tuesday but was not cleared to play, the linebacker told the Sun-Times.
“I have to be able to defend myself on the football field,” he said. “If I can’t do that, then they won’t clear me.”
Briggs is in the seventh week of recovery from a fractured left shoulder. His original timeline was six weeks.
He said he hopes to be cleared when he’s evaluated again in a few days, but the timeline casts doubt on whether he’ll play Sunday in Cleveland.
Briggs said the decision was up to team doctors, not him.
“The thing about it is, I understand why I haven’t been cleared,” said Briggs, who mingled at an Old Town Best Buy on Tuesday to help promote the Ultimate Gamers Showdown, a Madden NFL 25 tournament. “Being a linebacker on the field, it’s violent — you have to tackle, you have to take on a lot of people. If at any point you deal with the shoulder, which you use all the time, you risk setting yourself back.”
The Madden tournament with which Briggs is affiliated whittles down players from the nation’s top eight markets to a championship in Dallas.
