Bulls’ Thibodeau still hoping for Rose in Team USA red, white and blue
MINNEAPOLIS – Tom Thibodeau was excited to hear that USA Basketball will be making a three-day stop in Chicago this summer. That means three days in his own bed for the Bulls coach.
He’s hoping it means the same for star point guard Derrick Rose.
Rose, who is in the player pool to play with USA Basketball and compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in late August, is still staying away from contact in practice, but not because his rehab (right knee) hasn’t been going well.
“He’s feeling great, which is the encouraging thing,’’ Thibodeau said of Rose during the Wednesday shootaround. “He’s bouncing all over the place. The rehab is going very well.
“We’re not doing a lot of contact ourselves right now. So this point it really doesn’t make sense. Just continue on with what he’s doing. Do his work, do his rehab, encourage his teammates, be engaged. He’s done all those things, so that’s been a big plus for us.’’
The plan for the last three months was to try and make sure Rose would be on schedule to be an active participant with Team USA this summer, and there have been no setbacks in that plan. Now that it was announced that Chicago is one of four exhibition cities, well, to have both Thibodeau, who is an assistant on the team, and Rose there for the United Center crowd to see, that would really be special.
“It’s great,’’ Thibodeau said. “For USA Basketball, Chicago is such a great basketball city so I think it’s a natural. Hopefully, Derrick will be participating, so it’s great for everybody. It’s great for the city, great for our fans, great for USA Basketball, so I’m excited to hear that.’’
