Bears offensive lineman Brian de la Puente out with MCL sprain
BOURBONNAIS — Bears offensive lineman Brian de la Puente said he will be out a “couple weeks” after suffering a Grade 2 sprain in his left medial collateral ligament.
“[My anterior cruciate ligament] was fine, which was a big relief,” de la Puente said Sunday before practice Olivet Nazarene University. “I’ve just got to get treatment and hopefully get back out there in a couple weeks.”
A five-year veteran lineman, de la Puente suffered the knee injury during the second quarter of the Bears’ exhibition opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. He definitely feared the worse.
“The play cut behind me, and the tackle kind of made it into my legs,” he said. “It was a scary deal getting rolled up on like that. The MRI was promising. The big stuff was all right.”
Losing de la Puente would have definitely hurt the Bears’ depth on the offensive line. He played in place of starting right guard Kyle Long (foot) against the Eagles.
“Anytime you get reps with the starting group, you can establish that trust and communication, which is very important in an O-line play,” de la Puente said. “Those reps are valuable.”
