Bears confirm workout of Santonio Holmes, but opted to sign Greg Herd
BOURBONNAIS — With second-year wideout Marquess Wilson out after breaking his right clavicle, the Bears, as expected, worked out receivers. One them was veteran Santonio Holmes.
“I did not [see the workout],” coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday at Olivet Nazarene University. “I’ve got it on tape. I haven’t looked at it.
“[How he performed is] something for our personnel department at this time because I don’t have a response because I didn’t look at it.”
Holmes, 30, caught 23 passes for 456 yards and one touchdown last season in 11 games for the New York Jets. A foot injury limited Holmes to just four games in 2012. In his career, Holmes has 381 catches for 5,963 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Trestman doesn’t need to rush to watch Holmes’ film, either. The Bears signed second-year receiver Greg Herd late Tuesday and he practiced on Wednesday.
“Certainly, he’s another set of legs,” Trestman said. “He hasn’t had a lot of experience. Last year in Seattle was his only experience up to now to my understanding. I had a few minutes to speak with him last night.
“I saw him catch the ball. Certainly, he’s learning new things, new route structures and things like that. We’ll see how it goes. But our personnel department, [general manager] Phil [Emery] and the guys, the guys that watched him work out, felt that we should bring him in. Obviously, we’re down in numbers and they felt Greg was in the best position to help us at this time.”
