Two charged after attacking correctional officer near jail: police
A sheriff’s department correctional officer fired his weapon several times before heading into work at Cook County Jail Saturday night.
The incident happened about 10:15 p.m. at 19th Street and California Avenue, said Cook County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Cara Smith. The uniformed officer was heading to work when two men approached his vehicle and threw something at him, Smith said. The officer, “in fear of his life,” fired three shots, but no one was hit, Smith said.
After the officer fired his weapon the men entered a vehicle and drove away before shouting “gang slogans,” Smith said.
The duo’s escape was short lived, however, as officers that work near the jail and courthouse were able to stop them, Smith said.
Both were charged with battery and are due in bond court Sunday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building.
