Fire at Evanston towing company extinguished after five hours
(EVANSTON) A fire at a north suburban towing company was extinguished nearly five hours after it started Sunday afternoon.
Evanston Fire Department was cleaning up the scene about 7:30 p.m. at North Shore Towing, 2527 Oakton Street, according to Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.
The fire was first reported about 2:40 p.m. by someone who was passing by the towing company, Bobkiewicz said. No workers were there when it happened.
Several cars had caught on fire, but no buildings were affected, Bobkiewicz said. No one was injured.
The fire department had the blaze under control by about 4 p.m. with the help of six other agencies, but crews continued to fight smaller fires ”amidst large piles of crushed automobiles,” Bobkiewicz said. A cause had not yet been determined.
Power lines were down across the street of the company, and ComEd reported outages to 726 Skokie customers and 54 in Evanston, Bobkiewicz said. It was not immediately known whether power had been restored at 8 p.m.
