Rutherford to spend ‘overwhelming majority’ of $1.3 million on ads
A second candidate in the GOP gubernatorial primary is going up with TV ads.
Dan Rutherford’s campaign said the ads will go up on in early February, when the winter Olympics are underway.
“He’s confident that we have enough resources to go up and stay up to get to the finish line,” said spokesman Brian Sterling. “He has no plans to go negative. He’s trying to take the high road.”
Sterling said he couldn’t say how big the media buy will be but described it this way:
“He’s got $1.3 million in the bank, I think it’s safe to say the overwhelming majority of that money will be used on TV and radio,” Sterling said. “He’s cut five or six and they’re all positive.”
Bruce Rauner has been up on TV since last summer and has spent millions of dollars — and likely to spend millions more — before the March 18th primary.
Rutherford remains the only other candidate who has enough cash to combat Rauner on the airwaves.
State Sens. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, and Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, have struggled to raise funds needed for television.
