Senate Foreign Relations Committee reaches deal on Syria strike authorization. Read the text here
WASHINGTON–The GOP and Democratic leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee reached a deal on Tuesday night on the wording of a resolution to authorize a “limited and tailored” military strike against the Syrian government.
The committee is expected to “mark-up,” or debate the provisions of the resolution on Wednesday.
In order to address concerns of lawmakers that a Syrian strike could escalate into a full blown war, the proposed resolution gives Obama up to 90 days to order military action–starting with 60 days and then one extension of 30 days. It also specifically bans the use of U.S. troops on the ground in Syria “for the purpose of combat operations.”
