Sen. Kirk gets classified briefing on Syria: For attack, urges Obama to get Congress approval first
— Mark Kirk (@SenatorKirk) August 30, 2013
WASHINGTON–Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), who is urging President Barack Obama to order cruise missile strikes against Syria, was on a classified conference call with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough on Friday afternoon to learn more details about the Syrian government using chemical weapons against civilians on Aug. 21.
“Just wrapped up classified briefing on #Syria with @WhiteHouse CoS McDonough; I urge #POTUS to seek Congress’ approval before acting,” Kirk tweeted after the briefing. Kirk, back home in Illinois, got the briefing over a secure phone at a military facility.
Many members of the Illinois delegation are also urging Obama to get approval from Congress in advance of a strike; my column where the Illinois lawmakers stand is HERE. My column did not include Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) because she is traveling in Thailand; after my deadline she said in a statement she will not support “preemptive intervention in Syria” without more information from “our military and intelligence communities.”
