GOP Senators wrap up meeting with Obama; “Useful” but “inconclusive” Kirk
WASHINGTON–GOP Senators wrapped up a meeting with President BaracK Obama with the results “inconclusive,” according to Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), an architect of a compromise plan now in play to end the debt ceiling/shutdown crises.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) attended the meeting and said in a statement afterwards,
“I am hopeful that we are moving towards a bipartisan agreement to re-open our government and protect our nation’s full faith and credit. Any serious short-term package should serve as a catalyst to a ‘big deal’ with spending cuts and reforms to entitlements and the tax code.”
Kirk had earlier said he would support a no-strings attached measure to lift the debt ceiling by the Oct. 17 deadline and not risk the nation’s first ever default.
“We had a useful meeting with the President,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said when he returned to the Capitol from the White House.
Obama “spent a lot of time interacting with our members. There are currently a number of different discussions going on to get a solution on a bipartisan basis. And now that we’re back at the Capitol, we’ll continue to work on finding a way forward,” he said.
