Chicago Food Deserts: 2011 Vs. 2013
A city grocery store analysis of areas where residents are unserved — meaning they are outside a mile radius of a large grocery store — shows a reduction in the overall footprint of these “food desert” areas from 2013 to 2011. In terms of lower-income residents, the report stated a 21 percent reduction in the unserved population. Use these maps to see where Chicago food deserts existed in 2011 (map 1) and in 2013 (map 2):
