Chicago’s top 10 law firms
For 13 years, Vault has ranked the top Chicago-area law firms. And for 13 years, Kirkland & Ellis has finished first.
To compile the rankings, 1,000 associates from 165 Chicago-area law firms rated each firm on a 10-point scale of prestige. The rankings ignore profit and size in favor of the perception of colleagues and competitors.
Kirkland & Ellis finished first with a score of 7.714, making it the ninth most prestigious firm in the nation (New York’s Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz finished first with 9.083). Bartlit Beck was the big Chicago move, dropping from 10 to 12, with Katten Muchin Rosenman taking its place. The rest of the top 10 held steady from 2012.
Though Kirkland & Ellis is international, its oldest and largest office is still in Chicago. “They’re impressive in a number of different practice areas,” says Vera Djordjevich, director of research and consulting at Vault. “They have a very strong litigation practice, they do well in corporate areas. They have a very broad scope as well as being very concentrated in their hometown of Chicago.”
The rankings are meant for industry looky-loos more than clients searching for a defender. “Law firms and law schools take these pretty seriously,” Djordjevich says. “They’re a tool for helping candidates determine what firms they might want to work for.”
