The woman behind Love & Hip Hop spills her secrets and dishes on Missy Elliott’s new record?
“Love and Hip Hop” producer Mona Scott-Young swung through the Chi today to hype up her show and introduce her new moscato, Myx. (She’s also here to support K. Michelle, who is in concert tonight at The Shrine with Sevyn Streeter for the Rebellious Soul Tour.) But back to LaHH… Scott-Young says she’s not really in the business to be rachet. Moreso, the reality of what goes on behind the scenes in the music industry is fascinating, she says, and her popular Vh1 shows are simply a natural part of her “insatiable desire to win.”
“It’s like my years in music, there’s no secret formula,” says the mogul behind Monami Entertainment who strategically added a bubbly, sweet wine to her business. “With ‘Love and Hip Hop’ specifically I just started in a place that I knew. I’d managed a lot of these guys and met a lot of these women and developed relationships with them all. It’s everyday to us, but fascinating for people who don’t live in this world.”
True that. Scott-Young refers to incredible, difficult to believe love triangle storylines such as the secret marriage between Grammy-nominated Peter Gunz with his artist Amina. This is shocking because Gunz apparently had been cheating on his “baby mama” of 13 years, Tara. As Vh1.com says, “That completely turned the world upside down and legally made the side chick the main chick and the main chick the side chick.”
To that, Scott-Young says: “The fact that Peter Gunz was under my nose under last season, who knew was what going on behind the doors at his house? Do you think this guy up and married this woman for the sake of being on LAHH? He managed to do it without being on national TV and he was able to lead his double life. It has been a doozy. You cannot make this stuff up.”
Nope. You can’t.
Scott-Young has several other ideas in the works. Next year K. Michelle’s show will debut and it’s not likely, but possible that Scott-Young’s artist, Missy Elliott, might release an album. Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps.
“I’ve no doubt that there will be another Missy Eliott project, based on the fact that she’s got to be happy with the end result,” says Scott-Young. “This project is the never ending album.” – Adrienne Samuels Gibbs
