The hidden Harold Ramis: Joffrey Ballet fan
Harold Ramis was widely known for his work in comedy. But in the obituaries for the Chicago-bred actor, director, and writer who died Thursday at the age of 69, one thing tends to get overlooked. He also was a great fan of the Joffrey Ballet.
Ramis, along with Jay Alix, executive produced the 2012 documentary, “Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance,” the first film to tell the story of how the Joffrey Ballet revolutionized American ballet by daringly combining modern dance with traditional ballet at a time when this was not routinely accepted. Directed by Bob Hercules, and narrated by Mandy Patinkin, the film was produced by Una Jackman and Ramis’ wife, Erica Mann Ramis, also a Joffrey fan. It was shown in many film festivals, and was telecast on PBS’s prestigious American Masters series.
