Sue’s Morning Stretch: Millennium Park Saturday workouts are back
It’s time to take your workout outdoors and celebrate the beauty that is our city in the process.
Millennium Park will be the scene of free workouts that begin Saturday and continue through Sept. 6.
The workouts, which are 45 minutes long, start with Tai Chi at 7 a.m., yoga at 8, Pilates at 9 and Zumba at 10. All take place on the park’s Great Lawn. Each month the instructors change (here’s the schedule). They are affiliated with a variety of places – everywhere from the Chicago Park District to the East Bank Club.
But wait, there’s more! There will be music during yoga and Pilates and drumming during Zumba. I’ve taken Zumba with drummers and as much as I love regular Zumba, with drummers it is even better.
About 1,200 people come out to the Millennium Park workouts on any given Saturday, with the yoga and Zumba instruction the most popular, according to the city’s department of cultural affairs and special events.
If you are considering heading down, there is parking nearby at the Millennium Park or Grant Park garages. But, since you’re having a workout day anyway, why not bike? There is a Divvy station nearby as well as the Cycle Center in the park, which not only has bike parking but showers as well.
And here’s something new this year: free yoga classes are taught at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on the Great Lawn. Wouldn’t that be a great way to start the workday?
