Steve Carell talks work, life on A.D.D. comedy podcast
Longtime pals and former Second City colleagues Dave Razowsky and Steve Carell got together recently to record an episode of the podcast Razowsky hosts with Ian Foley called A.D.D. Comedy. The segment is now available on iTunes.
Here’s one story (of many) Carell recounted about their failed attempt to join Second City’s touring company.
Carell: We were doing a show with [director and improv instructor] Michael Gellman at the Organic Theater… We had auditioned for the Second City touring company. Neither or us had heard anything. And [Gellman] was the director of one of the touring companies at that point. I was applying to Yale Drama School for some reason, ’cause I didn’t know if it was going to happen at Chicago…And I had him write me a recommendation. And in his recommendation he said some nice things. And he finished it by saying, “And as a matter of fact, we’ve just hired Steve to be one of the newest members of the touring company.” [Razowsky had gotten the same news]. And that’s the first I’d heard of it, and I thought, “This is fantastic…”
He led us to believe, at least, that we’d been hired as understudies for the touring company. Of course, we’d heard it from no other source. So I thought, “Let’s take the bull by the horns.” So we started going and sitting in on touring company rehearsals. I don’t know how many we went to. we showed up a few times.
Razowsky: I remember Joyce [Sloane, the late and legendary Second City producer and touring company boss] walking through the theater and staring at us and going, Hmm.
Carell: Clocking that we were there. She asked Wendell, the touring company stage manager, “Who are those guys?” And he said, “Well, apparently they’ve just been hired.” And she said, “That’s not the case. I never hired them. Tell them to not come back here anymore.” So Wendell had to kind of give us the bad news… It was a shattering moment. I will never forget how devastating. Not even that we hadn’t been hired, but even now an opportunity to get hired had been lost because we’d made a bad showing of it.”

The following video was shot by Razowsky during Second City’s 50th anniversary celebration in Chicago in 2009. In it, Carell rehearses one of the theater’s most iconic scenes, “Maya,” with former fellow cast member Stephen Colbert.
