Michelle Shocked lives up to name with anti-gay tirade
American singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked went on an anti-gay tirade at a Sunday night concert — which resulted in the show being shut down, as well as a Chicago-area concert canceled.
During the performance at San Francisco club Yoshi’s, according to witnesses, Shocked began barking these gems to the crowd: “When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back,” and “You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.’ ”
The crowd — after exiting en masse, with the venue killing the stage lights and pulling the plug on her microphone — did just that.
After years of presenting a sexually ambiguous appearance and being surrounded by rumors that she herself was gay, Shocked, 51, announced in the mid-1990s that she had become a born-again Christian. She’s since made several anti-gay remarks. Then, in 2008, she told a Dallas gay newspaper: “There are some inconvenient truths that I’m now a born again, sanctified, saved-in-the-blood Christian. So much of what’s said and done in the name of that Christianity is appalling. According to my Bible, which I didn’t write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more less a sin than fornication. And I’m a fornicator with a capital F.”
It’s all a smidge confusing given that Shocked has presented a sexually ambiguous persona since her debut — and after years of mixed-messages about her sexuality, in 2000 Shocked came out as lesbian in an interview with Chicago gay newspaper Outlines (predecessor to the Windy City Times), saying, “I was with my first woman lover about a year and a half ago. To be honest, the real fear of coming out of the closet, not fear, but the real pressures of coming out of the closet had been if you had certain problems identifying yourself one way or the other.” (Read that full interview here.)
Shocked was scheduled to perform May 5 at S.P.A.C.E. in Evanston. No longer.
This statement appeared yesterday on the club’s Facebook page:
Many of you have reached out already following an ugly rant given by Michelle Shocked at her show in San Francisco last night. After speaking with the promoter of that show about the nature of the remarks, it’s clear that this is no longer a show we’re willing to put our name on. The May 5th performance at SPACE has been cancelled and refunds will be issued at point of purchase.
A Boulder, Colo., performance has been canceled, too. Expect more to come.
