Anita Baker faces legal woes
An arrest warrant has been issued for Grammy winner Anita Baker. The singer, who is known for such hits as “Sweet Love” and “Giving You the Best That I Got,” reportedly hasn’t given enough money to a contractor who worked on her home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.
When Baker did not appear in court last week, a Wayne County circuit judge issued the warrant for her arrest. It was sought by the attorney for the company claiming Baker owes them $15,000 for a remodeling job on her home in the Detroit suburb.
†Baker’s lawyer, Jamal Hamood has filed a motion to cancel the warrant, claiming the entertainer had not been served with papers — not knowing she had been sued by Ray A. Smith Painting & Decorating. He said the singer is out of town, and will stay away until the warrant issue is settled.
The contractor’s attorney says his client simply just wants his bill paid.
†Previously Baker ran into legal problems when a judge threatened to send her to jail in 2010, after she refused to sign papers tied to her divorce battle. Before she was sent to the slammer, Baker did reach a last-minute agreement and avoided jail time.
