Scott Lucas recovering from attack; Local H show is on
After canceling some dates due to a vocal chord injury sustained during a mugging, Chicago’s Scott Lucas is ready to get the latest Local H tour back on the road.
“It looks like he’s going to be OK,” said Jill Mango, Local H’s publicist, on Thursday. “He’s not going to need surgery.”
The incident took place Feb. 20 after a concert in Moscow.
I was assaulted and robbed. The attacker came up from behind and put me in a chokehold until I passed out. When I came to, I was in a stairwell with all of my pockets empty. No phone, no wallet, no cash, and (worst of all) no passport. Nothing. Even my hat and glasses were gone. It wasn’t until I found someone to ask for help that I realized something else was gone – my voice. When I opened my mouth to ask that person to call me a taxi, nothing but a scratchy croak would come out. I touched my throat and could feel that more damage had been done than I initially thought.
Mango said that upon returning to the States, Lucas attempted to play some shows with his other band, Scott Lucas & the Married Men. “Those shows are not nearly as vocally taxing as a Local H show, but he was still having trouble,” she said. “He realized he needed to deal with it.”
With help from MusiCares (a foundation that aids musicians, who often have no health insurance), Lucas was able to see a doctor.
“My vocal cords are definitely not disjointed and the medication I’ve been taking seems to be doing the trick,” Lucas reports.
So — Saturday’s gig at the suburban Montrose Room is still on the books. After that, 11 more dates heading westward.
The Married Men next play Chicago on May 1 at the Empty Bottle, opening for Empty Mansions.
Local H released a new album, “Hallelujah! I’m a Bum,” last fall.
